Bathroom Vanity Lighting: Ideas and the 2+1 Design Rule

Bathroom Vanity Lighting Ideas

When it comes to bathroom lighting, the vanity area is the most important space to take note of. A lot of time spent in the bathroom will be in front of the mirror. Proper bathroom vanity lighting will make it easier and faster to groom. While improper lighting will cast shadows on the face making it more inconvenient to groom. By understanding a few basic principles, choosing vanity lights for a bathroom can be simple.

Bathroom Mirror Lighting

Though there are many different vanity lighting ideas, there is one design principle to stick to. You will want to have lights as close to the mirror as possible, around as many sides as possible. A good example would be to look backstage on Hollywood sets or during fashion shows. Here you will see mirrors that have lots of light bulbs going all around the mirror. This allows for absolute even lighting across the face. In a home setting a better option would be to follow the 2+1 rule. This is when you have one light fitted on the left and one on the right of the mirror, and one right above the mirror. This will provide even and shadow free vanity lighting.

There are a number of bathroom light fixtures that you can use for the 2+1 rule – some will be better suited than others. The best vanity lights will be wall sconces – vertical ones for the sides and a horizontal bar for the top of the mirror. Sconces diffuse lighting out of the sides. So the vertical sconces  will shine light out left and right, while the horizontal sconces will shine light up and down, allowing you to cover the whole mirror space with light. Though less ideal, you can use more decorative lights like up/down lights, or lanterns around the mirror.

Bathroom Vanity Lights

Other bathroom vanity lighting ideas include using recessed wall lights. You can have lights fitted behind the mirror, which will softly glow all around the mirror. You can have the mirror set back into the wall and have the lights fitted into the edges of the wall. Another idea would be to use LED rope lights that line the bottom of the mirror or counter.

So there is really only one thing to keep in mind when deciding on bathroom vanity lighting ideas, and that is the 2+1 rule. Most bathrooms will have only one light in the middle of the ceiling, and this is not enough for proper vanity lighting. You will want to have lights specially fitted for the vanity area.

The Design Guide to Modern Bathroom Lighting

Modern Bathroom Lighting Ideas

Out of all the different bathroom lighting styles, from rustic or Victorian to Moroccan or traditional, the most chosen one is modern bathroom lighting. This is because in most homes this style will match with other rooms, and in a lot of homes the decor and fixtures within the bathroom are modern too. If you are using traditional or rustic light fixtures, you will want to have bathroom fixtures such as taps and décor that matches. Modern bathroom lighting fixtures will feature simple and clean designs.

Modern lighting styles for a bathroom will consist of lights that are usually made of chrome or stainless steel. They will have a clean and sleek design, without any ornamental or decorative features. The lamp shades should be frosted to diffuse the light, providing a soft and elegant glow.

For an example of modern bathroom lights, have a look at Murray Feiss bathroom lighting collections. For clean and simple contemporary bathroom lighting, the Tribecca Collection will be the right choice.

Recessed and Cove Lighting in Modern Bathrooms

Recessed lights are popular in modern homes. They are common in living rooms and bedrooms, but can also be used in bathrooms. Recessed lights are lights that are fitted within the ceiling – this hides the lights creating a minimalist and modern look.  Recessed lights can also be fitted into walls, behind mirrors or around vanity areas. A major undertaking would be to install cove lighting. This is when a cutaway in the ceiling is made to house lights that are hidden. For more on cove lighting have a look at our post: L&L Design Guide: Cove Lighting Ideas

Unique Modern Bathroom Lighting Ideas

Bathroom tiles that also act as lights

A unique bathroom lighting idea would be to use ‘Light Shape’. These are bathroom tiles that have an elegant floral shape cut out of them. A backlight then shines through the cutaway. Read more about it here: ‘Light Shape’ By Fiandre Provides A Fresh Look At Bathroom Light Fixtures

Tips:

  1. Don’t forget that for daytime use there is always natural lighting. This can be added to a bathroom through a skylight or frosted windows.
  2. Installing dimmer switches will allow full control over the lights. You can have soft glowing light for a more relaxing atmosphere, while bright lights can be used for morning preparations.

When it comes to modern bathroom lighting, the only thing to remember is to use light fixtures that are clean, sleek and simple in design. You will want to find lights that closely match the faucets, décor and other fixtures in the bathroom to create a unified modern look.

Shower Lighting Ideas and Fixtures That Will Transform any Bathroom

Shower Lighting Ideas

The bathroom is often an underappreciated and underinvested area of the home. With so many relaxing technological options, like steam showers and Jacuzzi tubs, you can turn your bathroom into your own personal spa. Your day most likely begins and ends in this room, so why not take a little extra care regarding your shower lighting ideas and create the perfect haven for recharging and unwinding?

The Basics

There are 2 good basic shower lighting fixtures that are absolutely worth the cost of installation. The first is a recessed fixture that lies flush with the ceiling directly above your shower. Recessed shower lighting provides ample and even visibility at any time of day and does not compete with accent lighting or any bathroom décor. The second is a flush mount ceiling light. For both, be sure to opt for a glass lens rather than a plastic one. Plastic will yellow over time and distort the quality of the lighting, while glass maintains its clarity and allows for optimal luminescence.

Natural Lighting

Bringing in as much natural light is the best way to light a shower space during the day. There are two ways of doing this. One is to add windows, which can be frosted or have blinds fitted to provide privacy. Another way would be to install a skylight.

A Water Show

The use of LED lighting in the increasingly trending as it provides modern bathroom lighting. LED shower lighting is efficient, environmentally friendly, and affordable. There are a number of stylish ways to incorporate LED shower lights into your bathroom.

Temperature-sensitive LED showerhead lights attach quickly and easily to any standard shower pipe. They are powered by the running water via an internal turbine, so they automatically come on when you turn on the shower and have no effect on your electricity bill. The real kicker, though, is that the light shines blue when you first turn on the shower, but once the water has heated up to 89 degrees Fahrenheit (32 degrees Celsius) the light turns red so you know that the water is nice and warm.

Led Rain Shower Head

Rain shower heads of various shapes and sizes are also a contemporary trend as showering under one is a luxurious experience. They have a crisp and intriguing futuristic look. Some models feature LED lighting that changes colors and creates a dramatic light show.

Creating a Feeling of Luxury

Do not forget about accent lighting. Accenting lighting is not just for the vanity area (aka bathroom mirror lights). You can install decorative and functional accent lighting inside or around your shower to really make it your own. LED rope lighting can be used to line the shower where the ceiling and walls meet. It adds definition and is highly energy efficient for long-lasting, hassle-free use. You can get them in just about any color and some manufacturers even offer color-changing and dimming options.

Bathroom wall lights are another option for adding accent lighting in a shower. One idea is to have a cut away within the wall. Here you can place a vase of flowers and have a light fitted right above. This can also be a place where you can store your amenities.

Another idea is to install Light Shape. These are bathroom tiles that have an elegant design cut out of them, where a light shines through. Have a look at our post for more information on them: designer bathroom lights by Fiandre.

The Final Touch

The final touch to bathroom shower lighting ideas is to add a dimmer switch to the light fixtures. This is a simple way of revamping your bathroom. That way you have the option to use full brightness when you need it for quick showering, shaving, getting ready, or reading in the tub, but you can tone it down when you want more tranquil in shower lighting.
