Designer Recycled Lighting: DIY Building Blocks Made From Tetra Pak Boxes

These are some beautiful lights that are made out of recycled Tetra Brik boxes – which are mostly discarded drink cartons. The cartons are cut into strips and two shapes are made that can fit together to create a light shade. No glue is needed.

The two shapes (a polygon and a hexagon) are just the basic building blocks. With the two shapes you can build a range of different lights: from a spherical lamp, to a drum light or floor lamp. You can find the steps that Ed Chew, a Malaysian designer, took at his website here.

Awesome Light Painting Photography (Aka Light Graffiti)

Here are 14 awesome light paintings. Light painting photography is done through a camera that can take long exposure shots. People use LED lights, fireworks, or any light source and paint images while the camera is taking the photo. Another form of painting with light photography is taking a picture of a busy street at night and having the car lights leave a light trail.

Recycled Coffee Filters Turned Into Designer Lights

We’ve highlighted before designers using coat hangers and wine bottles to create elegant light pieces. Now we’ve come across Lampada’s Etsy shop where they make a whole range of light fixtures using recycled coffee filters. The earth toned filters are creatively used to create different patterns and textures, resulting in beautiful lights as seen in the photos below. These lights are available for purchase over at Etsy.

Stella Bleu Designs: Industrial Shelving with Lights

Stella Bleu Designs create industrial styled shelving and light units – each piece is made from scratch and from reclaimed material. Everything is made to order and handmade. The collection includes garment racks, floor lamps, and there are also shelves that have lights fitted into them. Kevin Sutton: Recycling Wine Bottles to Create Beautiful Light Fixtures

We highlighted recently the work of Natalie Sampson who uses coat hangers to make unique light fixtures. This time we have Kevin Sutton of Zuma Creations who designs light pieces using recycled wine bottles. Each light uses energy efficient LEDs and is made to order.

The iconic piece of Kevin Sutton’s collection is a 35 bottle chandelier which has a copper centerpiece that houses the 18 LED lights. There is also a 4 Bottle Chandelier: made with solid copper and brass plumbing. Pendant lights, wall sconces, flameless candles, table lamps are also available as seen in the photos below.

Lighting Profile: Natalie Sampson’s Elegant Coat Hanger Lights

Using coat hangers, Natalie Sampson has created two unique light pieces. Each light design casts beautiful and elegant shadows across the room. The first piece is a pendant light that uses velvet pink coat hangers to create a spiral shape and a fiery shadow. The second piece uses wooden coat hangers to create a coffee table with a light inside. You can find her website here.

Ford Fusion Interior: The Hybrid Car and its Interior Mood Lighting

The Ford Fusion Hybrid car has been highlighted for its use of interior lighting. Their current cars have a center console with cup holders that have a ring of mood lighting. When you place a cup or a bottle inside the console it creates a unique glow – colors range from blue and red to pink.

More lighting design will be implemented to the interior of the 2013 Ford Fusion model. This time heavy use of ice blue lighting will be used in the Ford Fusion Hybrid interior. Ford’s research shows it to boost drivers’ alertness and mood while driving. This blue lighting will be used for the instrument display, center console, footwells, and cup holders. The 2013 model will do away with ineffective incandescent light bulbs and will have only LED lights.

DIY Entertainment for Kids Bath Time

In our kid’s bathroom lighting post we highlighted a floating LED light that creates an underwater light show that will delight kids when they are having their bath. Now we’ve just came across a unique DIY option – using glow sticks! Turning the lights off in the bathroom and using a few glow sticks will colorfully light up the bathtub. You can even put glow sticks inside of balloons, blow them up and have floating lights.

The Kitchen Green House: Urban Farming Using a Kitchen Light

The Glasshouse by Kristyna Pojerova was designed to allow people to grow their own herbs in their kitchens. It makes use of the heat expelled from a common light bulb, so it also doubles as a pendant light for the kitchen.

Shaped as a donut, it allows you to reach up into the greenhouse to grow and farm your own herbs. There are also a number of holes at the top of the glass fixture to provide ventilation for the mini greenhouse and the light can be controlled by using a dimmer.
