L&L Decoration Guide: Paper Lantern Chandelier Ideas

Paper lanterns are a great choice for event lighting as they are lightweight (which means they can be hung in tents, or from any overhead structure) and soft, gentle light fixtures that create an enchanting setting. They can also be used at home. Here are a few quick and simple ideas on how to create your own paper lantern chandelier:

Paper Lantern Chandeliers

A paper lanterns arranged at different heights to create a chandelier (and only one light hangs down in the middle of the lanterns).

Experiment with different colors and different sizes of lanterns – try two colors like white and pink or white and blue.

Want to create a unique look? Then get some fabric dye, a bucket, and dip dye those paper lanterns. Here is a tutorial on how to do them with lamps shades, which can be adapted to paper lanterns.

Try arranging the lanterns at various heights to give a more dynamic look.

You can either put a light in each lantern, or an easier way is to have one bright light hang down in the middle of the paper lantern chandelier, which will create a nice soft glow in all of the lanterns.

L&L Guide: How Much Does it Cost To Have Christmas Lighting Installed? And Run Them?

Estimated Total Costs for Having Christmas Lights Installed

1 Story House: $150 – $300

2 Story House $300 -$750

When trying to figure out how much does it cost to have Christmas lighting installed, a lighting company will take into consideration a number of factors. The number of stories your house has, the amount of lights that are needed, do you have your own lights or will you be renting theirs, and will you be needing the company take down the lights.

There are a number of reasons why someone will hire a company to have Christmas lights installed. There is the risk of climbing around and house, walking on the roof, all the while installing lights – it’s not an easy task.

Most Christmas lighting installation companies will come by your house, see the type of house you have, and hear how much lighting you want. Companies will recommended how many lights you need to cover your house for the look you want. Some companies do not rent out lights, so they will recommend what you need to buy. Prices for lights range from $10 to $100-$200 for fancy ones.

Companies will have a minimum charge – then charge per foot for installing the lights.

Minimum charges will range from $75 to $250. The lower end is for 1 story houses, while 2 story houses cost more. After that, the installation cost per foot is about $1-2 per foot for the first floor of a house, and $2-3 for the second floor, while landscape lighting will be around $1. Taking the lights down will cost around half of what it cost to put them up.

Tip: If other houses on your street are also hiring a company to install their Christmas lights, you might want to make sure your house doesn’t end up looking the same as everyone else’s. Either use a different company, or make it clear to the lighting company that you want something different.

How Much Does It Cost To Run Christmas Lights?

Most houses will pay an extra $4-7 for electricity for that month – this is for running the lights for 3-5 hours a day.

L&L Design Guide: Apartment Lighting Ideas

There are a number of design principles to keep in mind when looking for great apartment lighting ideas. Look to layer the lighting in a room and create different lighting effects, focus the lights to areas specific to the room, and go for a cozy or grand lighting design scheme.

The best lighting designs, which makes any room look great, uses different lighting fixtures. This avoids a monotone look – which would happen if you were to just use ceiling lights for example. Instead mix it up with ceiling lights, floor lamps, table lamps, wall lights, pendant lights, indirect lighting, mood lighting, etc. – as this will create different lighting effects, and layer the lighting in the room.

Lighting is used to bring focus to specific areas in a room. For example, in the bedroom bed side table lamps brings the focus of the room to the bed. In the living room, you can have back lighting behind the TV or couch. In the kitchen, under cabinet lighting adds a nice feel to the area.

If you want to create a cozy environment in your apartment then avoid using the ceiling lights. Use floor lamps and table lamps – keeping the lighting as low down as possible. On the other hand, if you want to create a grand setting in the apartment, then light up all walls and the ceiling, which will make the space feel larger. Cove lighting is a great way to make a space feel larger and grand – L&L Design Guide: Cove Lighting Ideas.

Here are a few specific light fixture ideas for any apartment:

Quick Changes

Most modern apartments will have recessed lighting. They use a false ceiling to hide all the parts of the lights, creating a clean look in the room. If you want to change this up, say to create a more intimate and cozy feeling in the room, then check out pendant light adapters. These adapters screw into standard ceiling light sockets, and let you have pendant lights without having to do any electrical work.

In Total Control

Another option is to install dimmer switches so you have full control of the lighting. Or there are now LED light bulbs that come with remote controls so you can dim them, or even change the color of the light. This is a great way of adding splashes of color to a room. If you want to brighten up a room, use green or yellow light. While dark purple or blues can make the room feel romantic for the night.

Moroccan Lighting: Exotic Home Style Decorating Guide, Ideas and DIY Projects

Known for its exotic culture and lavish style, Morocco uses traditional Arabian motifs in combination with elegant French styling for their décor. Spanish colonialism also influences Moroccan interiors. You can import this luxurious style to any home through Moroccan lighting and simple decorative pieces. A few simple changes can make any room an exotic Moroccan oasis.

Moroccan Style Lighting

What Makes Moroccan Lighting Unique:

      • The minaret is an onion shaped architectural element found atop many Turkish structures. This uniquely Arabian shape is used often in Moroccan style lighting.
      • Moroccan light fixtures mimic lanterns. Instead of cloth or paper shades which can be found in the Far East, metallic lanterns are used. This makes Moroccan lighting more decorative than conventional lamps and lamp stands.
      • Moroccan lights can be used to fill a space with color. Unlike Western decorative glass lampshades, which cover the top half of a light bulb, Moroccan light fixtures completely surround the light source. So when colored glass is used, the colors illuminate the whole room.

Moroccan Lighting Ideas

Moroccan light fixtures create a unique atmosphere in almost any living space. They are ideal for creating romantic or mood lighting:

      • They are ideal outdoors, in living rooms or in the bedrooms – areas that don’t require bright lights for doing tasks.
      • A few Moroccan styled table-top lanterns on a dresser or end table add mood lighting to any room.
      • To create a warm inviting entry way, welcome guests with shimmering hanging Moroccan lanterns.
      • For a home with a covered deck or patio, transport any outdoor living space to an exotic locale by hanging Moroccan fixtures above eating and drinking areas.

Have a look at the photos and the end of this post for more ideas on using Moroccan lighting around the home.

Décor Elements to Go Along With Your Moroccan Style Lighting

Transform an entire space using a few exotic elements in combination with Moroccan lighting.  First, focus on shimmering textures. Highlight metallic pendant lights with beaded satin pillows or curtains. Remember organic curved decorative shapes emphasize the rounded minaret structure of Moroccan fixtures. Look for wooden furniture with round and curved elements instead of clean lines and right angles.

Moroccan decorations are plush and rich. Use oversize pillows instead of chairs for extra seating. To emphasize the richness of Moroccan décor accent a room with deep jewel tones such as navy blue, magenta, forest green and rust orange. A few minor changes can alter the entire feeling of one room instantly.

DIY Decor Ideas Using Outdoor String Party Lights

Outdoor string lights are great for decorating an outdoor party because they are lightweight and inexpensive. Another great light fixture to use are paper lanterns (DIY Paper Lanterns: Our 5 Favorite Posts). Here are a few ideas on how you can create unique shades for outdoor string party lights and different ways you can use them to decorate an outdoor space.

Origami String Lights

Over at the Wit and Whistle website, they have created paper origami shades to cover LED string lights. The great thing about this idea is that you can create any sort of origami shapes from hearts, to flowers and fit them onto the string lights. LED string lights were used as they give off less heat – link.

Decorating With String Lights

canopy lights

There are a number of ways you can use string lights to decorate an outdoor party. They can be simply wrapped around railing, trees, or hung over fences or bushes. You can create a curtain of lighting by hanging a number of string lights side by side. Another idea would be to hang string lights in rows overhead which will create a starry night effect. They can be hung overhead either from the walls of the house, from trees, or plant a pole into the soil to hang them from. If you hang the string lights upwards onto a pole you can create a nice canopy/tent effect.

Alternative: Floating Balloon Lights

floating light balloons

You can easily create festive and colorful party lights by putting glow sticks or battery powered LED lights inside of balloons and blowing them up. These glowing balloons can then be scattered around outdoors (they will even float in pools). Or if you want to go a step further, look to rent a helium tank and buy helium specific balloons from a party store to create floating glowing lights, which can be tied down around the backyard.
